The group were surprised at the airport with a lovely welcome from all the German participants and there was much chatting on the bus journey to Ortenburg. At the school we were welcomed by some traditional Bavarian music and snacks and the Headteacher also welcomed us all to the school. Sunday was spent with the families and despite the rather overcast weather some of the group ventured to the open air pool and diving boards, others visited the local zoo, cycled, went to a traditional Volksfest and even to Austria. In the evening there was a school concert in a local Gasthof where more Bavarian music was enjoyed accompanied by Schnitzel and Pommes – there was even a rendition of the reknowned ‘ein Prosit’ song.

Monday was our first day in school and the sun came out. To start the day the group had a lesson with Frau Pangratz to pratise German and get to know each other. We also made a note of our first impressions which have been overwhelmingly positive. We then had an official welcome from the mayor who told us all about Ortenburg ( in German) and also gave us all a free ticket to the swimming pool. On the walk back to the school we just had to stop at the Eisdiele and sample the first of many delicious ice creams. To finish the day the group accompanied their partner to a lesson before returning home for the afternoon and evening. A fabulous start to the week and some very impressive German.
